Covid-19 and SCS

Fortunately (or unfortunately for some of you), SCS is still fully functional as of April 2020. SCS is considered essential for the SAF's operational readiness.

Why is this so?

This is due to cycles in the army. Typically, there are four intakes every year for SCS: 2 "JC Batch" intakes, and 2 "Poly Batch" intakes.

Correspondingly, there are 4 graduation ceremonies (Specialist Cadet Graduation Parades, or SCGPs) per year. When the newly minted commanders graduate from SCGP, they will go to their units either as 1st-year commanders, or as 2nd-year commanders to replace ORD-ing 1st-year commanders.

1st-year commanders are crucial: they take over recruits who have just passed out from BMT. Alternatively for mono-intake batches, they train newly-enlisted soldiers from BMT to the end of their first year.

2nd-year commanders are also crucial: they take over 1st-year commanders who would otherwise by ORD-ing.

If SCS is temporarily halted, there would not be enough commanders! The only way that SCS could potentially be halted would be for a SAF-wide pause.

Selected Key Changes

  • Social distancing is being enforced (marching, lessons, transportation etc.)
  • Masks are distributed to cadets
  • Non-essential training activities are being cancelled
  • Training is conducted in smaller groups to prevent chance of virus spread
  • Regular temperature taking is further enforced
